SOU Gimnazija Koco Racin – Macedonia

SOU Gimnazija Koco Racin is a general secondary school established in 1857. As a public educational institution, it offers general education to more than 800 students, about 120 of which are of Albanian nationality taught in Albanian language, and the rest attend classes in Macedonian language. There are 64 highly qualified teachers who teach different subjects in Macedonian and Albanian language and strive to educate and motivate students to acquire knowledge and expand their skills and competences.

As a general educational school, it includes a number of compulsory subjects for the first two years, and it offers several elective subjects depending on the area the students have selected for third and fourth year of study. The areas of specific expertise are: humanities, languages, art and mathematics. This is the first year that mathematics was introduced as a compulsory subject for the national State graduation (matura) examination apart from native language and literature, one foreign language of students’ choice (English, German, French or Russian), and one elective subject. As a secondary school we have best results on the national State matura examination among three other high schools in the municipality, according to the official data announced by the Ministry of Education. This proves the unselfish efforts of the teachers and the quality of the students’ knowledge.

Our school is the only school in the municipality (among 4 high schools and 5 primary schools) that included education in Albanian language for students of Albanian ethnicity several years ago, and there is a diversity of students from different social and ethnic background. There are four classes, one in every generation with about 30 students in each class. According to the results they have shown on the national examinations we can state that lately the results have been much lower than during the period when they were not included.

SOU Gimnazija Koco Racin works hard to improve the process of education, to establish better communication in the classroom, to build open and tolerant relationships with students, to implement new innovative methodology and tools in the process of teaching, to become an international school in terms of offering education to students who would become European citizens aware of the diversities, confident and ready to actively participate in the society.

We have been actively cooperating with external parties, like closely collaborating with the municipality and the local community. We have invited parents to participate in the creation of the curricula and to occasionally teach students about their field of expertise. Also for the needs of a successful realization of the curricula various professionals are being invited to give lectures to students and share their knowledge and experience. As external partners we have the Peace Corps volunteers who help students understand the English language better in terms of speaking and listening to the authentic language they use.
